on Dec 15, 2009 at 3:53:34 am

I am entering the hd world (late i know) but i have a G5 dual 2.5, i am about to purchase a kona 2 card with break out box. Will this be good enough to edit video from an xlh1 on final cut 6?
Or i just be better getting a blackmagic hd link to just monitor and just wait till i can get some money together to upgrade to mac pro

The K2 will be fine for your immediate needs. It's an excellent card by current standards. There's only 2 features that it lacks- it won't cross convert between 1080 and 720 and it won't monitor 2k. Other than that it's a great card.

Will this set up also work for good hd monitoring? What would be a fair price to buy this card used?
What else should i put in my g5 to make it a workhorse for this card?

If you decide to keep the G5, I'd try and get a Kona 3X vs a Kona 2.

[Marco Amador] "Will this set up also work for good hd monitoring?"

Absolutely. That is one of the primary purposes of ALL capture cards. That'll work great.

[Marco Amador] "What would be a fair price to buy this card used?"

$1200? It's pretty old. But do what Jeremy suggests maybe...the Kona 3X.

Finding PCI-X capture cards NOW will be a task. But the Kona 2 and 3X, or even the Kona LH (not e or i, just LH) will be good too.

Thanks Shane,
Im just entering this world on a semi professional level adn i know i should get a mac pro, but it seems that the G5 can get the job done if configured. Was wondering Shane what else should i add to the g5 to make it work great with the Kona 2?
And actually i buying the KONA2 for a very reasonable price, way below the 1200, it seems like a great deal now with your comments.

Thanks so much Tom, but i already got the card at a little higher price, but thank you so much for your generous offer! I do have a question for you? How did you have this configured? Did you use it on a G5?

Sorry for the delay, Marco. Yes, G5, but we have also used them in an HP machine. The new driver turns it into a Xena card.

The current driver software flashes the card as such.

[Marco Amador] "What would be a fair price to buy this card used?"

About $400-500 with the K box breakout box. That's what they typically go for on eBay.

Hey Arnie and Shane,
I have installed Kona Card 2 w break out, and using an hd lcd tv to monitor. Any idea why the tv is showing / producing lines in playback on the screen. I tested the tv in other applications and the lines are not there. They are being produced by the set up. Is there a specific set up that i am overlooking here. I was testing a hd timeline that is hd 1080 60i? Please help...
