Not sure if this is possible, but how about writing an app that can take advantage of the processing power of the chipset in a LHi or K3 so we could take say, an anamorphic SD clip and run it thru the app stretching it out and cropping the sides to create a center cut SD out of it.
Or taking a 720 or 1080 clip and run it thru the app and downconvert to SD letterbox.
This would be nifty. Perhaps the chipset on the board can only read from an SD or HD stream, but if you could get around that and feed it a QT movie how much more amazing would it be?
Since FCP is so awful at scaling, and because sometimes we need to scale/convert and just need a simple uncluttered utility to get it done, utilizing the amazing processing power of the card already in our system...too cool.
I know weh have compressor etc, but sometimes a simple tool to do something very straightforward is a great option too.

The card already does this in realtime during ingest and playback. If we need something scaled down, we simply record out to tape and then back in again. Does the same thing as an "App" with no rendering needed. And quite often this process is much faster than using Compressor.

I'd like to see it too. Don't know if you've seen it, but the Elgato Turbo is a sweet little h264 converter. AJA should make a little hardware ProRes converter that will also change format/aspect ratio and also add/remove pulldown.
By the way, your sd to sd can be done right in the timeline. Simply make a 4x3 timeline, drop in your anamorphic footage which will letterbox, then scale.
