Does KonaSD card and Leopard play well together?
on Jun 30, 2009 at 1:01:16 am

Yes, I have a 5 year old KonaSD card that needs to last a little longer on a G5 Dual 2.5 system. I would like to upgrade to Leopard (finally) but I don't know if Black Magic is supporting this configuration with their decklink software. My system works flawlessly with Mac OS 10.4 Tiger.

The older posts, here on CreativeCow, ask the same question, but no replies have been made.
Is someone having success with a similar hardware situation?

Thanks CC community.

Did you call AJA Tech Support and ask them directly? That's what I would do.

Thanks for the suggestion. In the past AJA has not been to helpful since they didn't originally make the drivers for the card. I have emailed Black Magic, as they are provider of the software, and I got what sounded like an inexperienced answer, and not a promising answer to my question.

As I said, some older posts here have asked this same question. I'm hoping a similarly geared shop can tell me that all is fine and working well together.

Jim,

Yes those were some turbulent times :)
Since Grant wrote the original mac drivers but was also developing his own company behind the scenes things were interesting.

I would certainly call AJA and ask their advice BEFORE changing anything. You may be out of luck with that upgrade unless you step into a card that they fully support on their own (they write their own mac drivers now). They do have some fairly inexpensive boards on the SD side. As far as I know they haven't gone back and re-written drivers for the SD, HD, DL or Kona2, but I could be wrong as we have never used their drivers (we have written our own for Linux).

Best of luck,
Ramona

Following your advice and others, I called AJA and they termed the KonaSD card as "end of life", meaning they don't support the card anymore. In fact, they said, most products are "end of lifed" after about 3 years. In this case, "Black Magic is the only one that could answer this driver question," AJA said.

Thanks for your help, maybe another CC member will chime in, otherwise I may just dive in and upgrade, and see what happens.

Thanks,
Jim

Do you by any chance have an extra internal hard drive in your machine? If so, you could install Leopard and all the current drivers, software etc.. that you have on that particular drive. Fire up the system in Leopard and see if it works.

If it doesn't simply revert back to your original internal drive and go back to TIger.

It very well could be one of those things that you really do just have to jump in and see what happens, but don't do it at the expense of destroying your Tiger setup.

And Jim, exactly why do you want to install 10.5 on a perfectly working older system ? What is it going to do for you, other than to cause you lots of additional hardware problems ?

Thank you Jim. I now know why the ASIO driver's for the Xena SD board
worked for Audition and now don't work for for the LH. AJA say's
those programs are not supported. Then I say what are the ASIO driver
for in the Windows world anyway. The last working ASIO driver was made
by BM.

Thank's for the info.

I've been away for a while ... thanks for all the responses. Yes, I did copy my internal hard drive and then I upgraded to Leopard with my fingers crossed. The results were good. Kona (using BM 4.7 driver) still works fine, just like it did with Tiger.

I wanted to upgrade for a couple of reasons, primarily because some newer 3D software I want to use, only works with OS 10.5. I'm also an Apple Certified FCP Trainer and I want to be comfortable with Leopard.

Thanks to all.
Jim
