Live Capture Cabling: HVX to Kona3

Hello all,

Looking for some advice on cable length restrictions for the following setup. I'll be capturing from a HVX200 to a Kona 3.

Cabling:
HVX200 to AJAHD10A (or rented Colbalt box) connected via Component HD
AJA HD10A (or rented Colbalt box) connected via BNC (HDSDI) to Kona 3.

Audio will be captured to P2 but will not be apart of the live capture.

Any suggestions on cable lengths and or length limitations for both the Component and BNC cables?
I'll be aprox 20-30 feet away.

Also, in general:
What is the max Length BNC (HDSDI) cable I can use for capturing?
What is the max Length BNC (HDSDI) cable I can use for monitoring?

Appreciate the help,
thanks,
Ted

hundereds of feet. The most I have tested is 100feet and it worked fine. I probably could have went more. You'll be fine with 30 feet. If you need audio, I'd get the HD10AVA and embed the audio to the HDSDI and capture that embedded via ioHD/HDSDI.

OK
that depends on the quality and shielding of the cable.
HD rated BNC cables with shielding are easily good to 150 ft. However I have also seen poorly shielded cables not able to run 10ft in a truck due to interference.

Over 100 ft runs I recommend using tactical fibre from Telecast.-
They make an HDSDI > fibre converter (the rattler) that I have used to run as far 15000 ft when needed, then converted back to HDSDI on the other end.- it is that simple I have personally done this with 5000 ft of tactical fiber cable in a stadium.

Thanks Guys,

Sounds like I should be good to go as long as the cables are nicely shielded.

Would you try and keep the component cable of this equation on the shorter side? (HVX to AD Converter) and use the HDSDI cables to stretch the longer distance? (AD Converter to Kona3)
Just curious if anyone has a huge preference either way.

I think since I'll only be about 30 or so feet away I may keep the component cable to the AD Converter short and have it live with the stationary camera setup and then use the HDSDI to stretch the distance from the AD Converter to the Kona3.

Thanks for the help,
Ted

[Ted Griffis] "I may keep the component cable to the AD Converter short and have it live with the stationary camera setup and then use the HDSDI to stretch the distance from the AD Converter to the Kona3. "

That's exactly how I would handle it.

me too --keep the heavy cable the shortest.

the component cable is by far the heaviest and analog does not travel as well/ far as the digital signal does.

We have also run Telecast a very long distance and the best part is that a single strand can carry a signal to and from, in dual link :)

Ran this on the ground with lots of people walking on it and vehicles rolling over it. Worked perfect.
