LHe not recognised on boot
on Mar 17, 2009 at 1:02:16 pm

Hi All,

Currently troubleshooting a colleagues G5 that is having problems with an LHe.

Over the last year they've had intermittent boot problems with their LHe - basically on boot the card isn't recognised. Control panel reports no hardware found. Reseating the card has, on occasions, helped - but I think this may be coincidental, as rebooting has too.

I've swapped PCI slots - its in slot 3 now of a Quad 2.5 G5 - and still no joy.

I've upgraded to 6.03 Kona drivers, and was curious to see no firmware updater - I expected to see one in the utilities folder as per release notes but not to be found.

Any thoughts? When the card works, all is well on the video I/O front.

I've looked for obvious signs of bad caps on the logic board but nothing to be seen.

Your thoughts as ever are appreciated!

Jason

System... G5 quad 2.5, Kona LHe 6.03, OSX10.4.11, QT7.55, FCP 5.14.

dead card
if you have the luxury of trying it in another computer, this would be wise. But you tried 2 different slots, and the AJA Control Panel
reports "no hardware found" - you have a dead card.

The only other possiblity is that you have a hairline fracture in the MAC G5 Quad buss (the logic board). If you have a defective motherboard, your computer is useless, and another card won't help you. You can determine this by putting this LHe into another MAC. If it works - it's your computer. If it doesn't work - it's your card.

Thanks Bob, you've echoed my feeling about this. Fortunately a friendly local reseller (not the one the kit came from) has offered to test the card, so it's going up to them ASAP so we can rule it out. Double fortunately they still have AppleCare for another couple of months.

We'll see how it goes!

Cheers,

Jason

Hello Jason

Thanks for helping out here

Can I suggest you have the client contact Danielle at Digibox (the UK distributor):

Digi-Box (Distributor)

Danielle Jones or Dan Sinclair or ask for AJA service
4 Allied Business Centre Coldharbour Lane
Harpenden, NS AL5 4UT GB
http://www.digi-box.co.uk
Danielle.jones@digi-box.co.uk
Ph: +441582466100
Fax: +441582768489

They can send an advanced replacement card (or help troubleshoot).

It's also important to us to know if a dealer is not being helpful.

Best regards

Hi

reading further (which I should have done first) dropping in to the dealer is a good move as they'll have another Mac to help troubleshoot in case it's the motherboard.

Either way just wanted to highlight the advanced replacement service here if you need it.

thanks again for your help (& Bob)

Matty

Thanks for that Matty, I don't know who their original dealer was but QuadLogic in Bristol have the card at the moment, they'll have a look and if it's faulty I'll get them to get in touch with Danielle.

Many thanks for all the help and advice, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Jason

Thanks Jason

Quadlogic are good guys

I recall we had some communication when you were considering Kona before?

Are you west country based?

I was thinking of getting in touch with the Bristol FCP user group, are you part of that? I wondered if they'd like to know more about what AJA are about some time.

Cheers

Matty
