720P Layback to SRW-5800

This is my first attempt at a 720P, 59.94 layback to the SRW-5800, and it did not work as nicely as expected. After getting the servo lock errors in the ETT window in FCP, I switched from the 59.94 Panasonic VTR device control preset (default in the Kona 3 720P ProResHQ easy setup) to the 29.97 Sony preset, and voila! It worked (although I had to adjust the frame offset by one frame as the edits were happening a frame early). Is there an easy setup that would better suit my situation:
Sequence setting: 720P 59.94 ProRes HQ
Kona 3 card v 6.0.2
FCP 6.0.5
QT 7.5.5
OS 10.5.5

Or am I stuck with my improvised set-up?

Since 720p is mostly a Panasonic format I am sure AJA put that preset in there to make things the most easy.

In your case, simply open up the audio video settings (option-command-q), change the device control preset to the Sony protocol you made and save a custom easy setup.

what station on planet earth wants a SRW-5800 at 720p ? I bet you anything that the delivery requirement is 1080i 29.97 for the SRW. Your project is at 720 59.94, but the DELIVERY REQUIRMENT is 1080i 29.97. Am I correct ? Have you asked your client what they actually want ? You are not stuck, the Kona will cross convert for you.

[David Brier] " Is there an easy setup that would better suit my situation: "

Follow Jeremy's advice.

In all honesty I find layoff of 720P to SR fairly rare and as JG said it uses panasonic deck protocols because the vast majority of 720p is shot on Panny cameras, Sony has only very recently started truly supporting 720 with the EX series cameras.

Rare indeed, that's why I had never done it before, and yes, that's what the client wanted. The spot is all graphics, and they wanted to keep everything progressive.

I will save my custom set-up, and dust it off should this arise again.

Best,

MyNetwork TV uses 720p exclusively for the HD programming and will take Panasonic D5 or HDCAM-SR.

if you check their specs- they mainly request D5 and only want SR if that D5 content not available.

For the record, I have the specs right in front of me and it doesn't say that anywhere on them....however, anecdotally I know that they do, in fact prefer D5, so you are not incorrect.

Apology to Gary...my previous post sounded a bit snippy upon a re-read. Not meant that way at all.

My initial point was that I have actually delivered 720p shows on HDCAM-SR for MyNetworkTV.....so its not completely bizarre to do so....and their specs do offer the option of D5 or HDCAM-SR for delivery. I do have a copy of the specs, and the version i am looking at, which was provided about a month ago does not express a preference...however I do know from speaking with them in the past, that they do in fact prefer D5 if possible.

From their delivery spec sheet....

Video
Video tape delivery shall be on HD-D5 (Panasonic 3700B model or equivalent) or HDCamSR
in 1280x720 progressive (720p) at 59.94Hz (SMPTE 296M-2000).

A minimum of 60 seconds of SMPTE reference color bars (SMPTE RP 219-2002 for
1280x720) and test audio tone shall be recorded on the head of the tape. The test signals
must accurately reflect the program material recorded.
Audio

There is no other mention of a preference anywhere in the docs that were sent to me.
