Capturing 23.98 Varicam to 29.97 via 1400 deck?
on Feb 2, 2009 at 7:55:21 pm

Hello all,

Its been a while since I've had to do this but my recollection was, that with a Kona card I could capture material from a 1400 deck that was shot at 23.98 to a 29.97 psf timeline in FCP and that the Kona would only delete the necessary duplicate frames of a given clip to retain a 29.97psf frame rate and thus be compatible with a 29.97 timeline.

Am I wrong and not remembering correctly? is this possible?

The desire to cut in 29.97 is that there is other source material that is 29.97 and it should make for an easier conform for broadcast then capturing the 23.98 varicam material at either 24 or 60.

Any of you Kona experts know if this is possible with a Decklink HD Pro or Extreme?
I'm an AJA user myself and I don't think that the Decklink cards remove the duplicate frames of varicam on the fly, is there another way to accomplish this in a decklink workflow? FRConverter?

Thanks for the help
Ted

You want to cut in a 29.97 SD or HD timeline? If it's HD, I'd capture to a 60fps timeline if you want to add in 29.97 material

If you want to edit in 23.98, you can also get the Sd material converted.

Please tell us the exact formats you want to work with in 23.98 and 29.97.

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

The formats we are using are Varicam 720p59.94 shot at 23.98fps Loading from 1400.
and
Some, but not much Canon 1080i 24f (cross-converted to 720p via Kona 3) loading from Sony M35U.

The intent was to capture both at DVCProHD 720p at 29.97 if it was possible, but it sounds like that's not feasible? Cutting in 60 is fine, though it requires double the storage and bandwidth and I was trying to keep everything in 29.97 throughout for that issue.

Another option I guess, would be to load and cut everything in 23.98 and when we online/conform throw the 23.98 material in a 59.94 timeline and lay in 60p graphics/lw3rds etc.

Thanks,
Ted

Is that 1080i24f real honest to goodness 23.98? or is it 29.97 w/pulldown?

It is certainly not honest to goodness.... but I've heard that the Sony M35U will play it back and allow for capture at 23.98 or 29.97.

[Ted Griffis] "It is certainly not honest to goodness...."

:) Thanks, I needed a laugh.

Well, as with everything in this format splintered world we call video, you have a few options.

You can capture that @ 1080 psf 23.98 and then use the 1400 deck to capture your 720p23.98 to 1080 psf 23.98 (conversion done by the deck).

You can use the Kona to cross convert the 1080 psf 23.98 to 720p23.98 if you can get that out of the HDV deck.

OR you can capture everything at either 1080i29.97 (conversion done by 1400 deck or Kona) or 720p60 (conversion done by Kona or perhaps the HDV deck).

If you want to stick with 720p and can't get 23.98 out of the HDV deck, I'd capture everything 720p60.

720p30 ain't gonna happen (and please forgive my improper English, but only briefly).

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, I'd like to cut in 23.98 for storage reasons but need to re-check my deliverables and see if that will fly, otherwise, 60 will be the answer.

Thanks for the honest to goodness help. :-)
cheers,
Ted

[Ted Griffis] "Thanks Jeremy, I'd like to cut in 23.98 for storage reasons but need to re-check my deliverables"

Deliverables will be the key.
