never had his request before, but client wants it. cannot get the fcp/kona control panel settings to do this in combination with fcp easy setup as usual. my instinct is that it cannot be done (not documented either).
but - i called kona tech support and we stepped through an unorthodox way to "trick" the control panel into doing it and i was able to capture a small clip. then it didn't work next try.
is this a common workflow for anyone?

You have a Kona 3 I take it?

Open FCP and choose the appropriate 720p59.94 format.

Go to the AJA Kona Control Panel and right click on the frame buffer and set it to 720p59.94 and then set your secondary to 1080i29.97.

Go back to FCP.

You should now see a cross convert icon before the frame buffer if you can see the Control Panel with FCP open/selected.

when selecting the 720p59.94 easy setup in fcp that sets the k3 cp buffer to the same. selecting 1080 secondary gives crossconvert icon after buffer. tried on both 10.5.4 / k3 6.0 and 10.5.5 / k3 6.1.
only way we (aja support) got it to work was to quit fcp, set k3 control panel, restart fcp (input sdi icon is now red indicating incompatible format - and no crossconvert icon before buffer) but got it to work once...

Hmm. Now you've piqued my interest.

I'll have to try it out tomorrow.

me too. i had it in the back of my mind this was basic stuff, then it occurred to me that maybe this was something the card only did in standalone mode.

I don't know Paul. I can get this to cross convert over and over on this machine.

Are you sure you're setup properly?

[Paul Provost] "weird. now i can get it to work over and over. trying the same setups as yesterday."

You forget the power of the quit and go home early method. It can really solve a lot of problems, even overnight.
