Monitoring on an SD Component Monitor
on Oct 22, 2008 at 4:09:42 pm

I have a really nice SD Broadcast component monitor. I am waiting on my BVM 20 to arrive for use with my Kona 3 (which just came today!)

Can I monitor HD footage on the SD monitor using the component outputs?

Yes, just set up the Kona 3 control panel to downconvert your HD output to SD. This is covered in the AJA User Guide that came with the Kona 3.

Hey Walter (or anyone else!)

It looks like I set the downconversion correctly in the control panel, but it still doesn't appear to work correctly. In FCP, I have my video going out 525i 29.97 10Bit RGB. I am only getting single frames (which are actually squeezed images). If I change the video out to 525i 29.97 RBGA, I get playback on the monitor, but the image is cut off. Meaning, It looks like the image is still 1868 x 780 and I am only able to see the area that "fits" in the 720 x786 frame.

[Michael Nichols] "It looks like the image is still 1868 x 780"

the Kona cards will only show a realtime downconversion with "standard" raster video formats in FCP.

Crap! So does that mean, in order for me to monitor my footage on an SD monitor through the Kona, I need to render the frames within a 1920 x 1080 canvas?

What about HD monitoring? Can I send the 1868x780 sequence out to an HD CRT?

Not to resurrect a dead thread, but my problem is similar so I thought this might be a good jumping off point.

I have an FCP project where the sequence is 1080p23.98. In the AJA control panel, when this is selected as my "Frame Buffer", the Secondary (Converted) Format is greyed out. Does this mean I cannot monitor this in SD?

I noticed that only certain formats allow a Secondary Format. So I guess this is true for all of them?

Thanks!
