Repeatable edit to tape problem
on Jul 9, 2008 at 12:15:39 am

Setup:
Mac Pro 3 gig 8 core.
8 gig memory.
OS 10.5.4
Quicktime 7.5
FCP 6.0.4
KONA 3 5.0 software
Sonnet 8TB RAID (eSATA)

And SD timeline (for this example, but it does the same thing with others).
Output to DigiBeta A500.

After blacking etc.,
drag sequence to assemble window.
All is well, edit is made.
I decide to stop the process by hitting esc key.
I fix whatever title needed fixing or similar change,
render all, save sequence,
then drag sequence to assemble window again.
FCP freezes.
Force quit FCP, but it doesn't completely quit.
Have to shut down computer to get rid of FCP.
Restart computer.
Relaunch FCP.
Open edit to tape.
Drag sequence to assemble window, all is well and edit is made.

Here's a test I preformed:
I tried stopping an edit to tape in progress, then save and quit FCP,
then relaunch FCP, and then open edit to tape and drag the sequence
to the assemble window, FCP freezes. So quitting the program
had no effect but restarting the computer does, which also would be
resetting KONA 3.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,
Dan

[Dan Riley] "Any idea what's going on? "

No, not for sure, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the correct drivers? (you say you are on version 5, but perhaps you mean to be on v 5.1 NDD?)

Are you sure your PCIe slots are configured correctly according to this document? (please read it carefully):

That's the ticket Jeremy. Upgraded to 5.1 this morning and it works much better.

Still have an issue with HD timelines though. When I drag the sequence to the
assemble window, FCP sits for about 60 seconds with a beach ball before it
puts up a dialog box to allow me to edit to tape. When doing an SD timeline
this doesn't happen. But I can live with it waiting to do the job. That's much better
than crashing and having to get back up and running.

Jeremy, what's the difference between the 5.1 and the 5.1 NDD version?
I'm using 5.1. What does NDD stand for?

Never mind. I went to the AJA site and see the info about the difference.
I've installed 5.1. Do you recommend the 5.1 NDD version?

I'm running a Mac Pro 8 core, 3 GB, 8 GB ram system.
It has the RadeonX1900 display card.

NDD is tied to your operating system. If you are on 10.5.2 or above, go NDD. Why fart around?

"This 5.1 NDD version is recommended for OS X 10.5.2 users. Note: The AJA
KONA driver version 5.1 NDD is the same as driver version 5.1, but removes
the Macintosh Desktop Display feature.

With the regular version of the 5.1 driver, some users may experience issues with Quartz Extreme, the behavior of their computer displays, and in some cases, kernel panics may occur with certain graphics cards installed. If any of the issues mentioned occur, the driver version 5.1 NDD should be used instead of version 5.1. Driver version 5.1 NDD is also the recommended version for use with the latest Intel Xserve with Xeon 5400 series processors, model (MA882LL/A)."
