Analog Audio IN, AES Out?
on Jun 16, 2008 at 8:52:55 pm

Hello Folks,

I have an analog NTSC source (component) that I am using with input Passthrough for the video. I have the L&R stereo audio going to the analog 1&2 inputs on the LH. I see the video but I cannot get audio through the AES output. The AES works as I can play Kona TV audio through it.

Am I missing a setting somewhere or is analog in, aes out not possible for audio?

Thanks,
Robert A. Ober
PS: Control Panel says Version 5.1 (5.1). Computer is G5 with 10.4.11 and the lastest QT, etc.

Are the audio meters bouncing on the front of the io?

By AES, you mean the BNC's correct?

For the input, have you selected analog audio or are you on embedded?

Kona LH, no meters. The audio interface it feeds has meters and they are flatlined.

No, I mean the XLR that says AES out.

Yes, I have selected analog for the audio input.

Thanks,
Robert:-)

[Robert Ober] "Kona LH"

Woops, for some reason I thought I was in the io forum. Doh!

So you aren't getting audio at all on the passthrough, even analog?

No prob on the woops.

I will recheck the analog outs. Due to my setup, I would prefer the AES out. Kona TV and FCP will play through the AES.

Robert:-)

[Robert Ober] " Kona TV and FCP will play through the AES. "

Which makes me think something's wrong with the input. If you don't get anything on the analog outs, we'll know.

Wellll, I tried the AES again and I do get audio. Problem is that the level is miniscule compared to the level I get from FCP. I can only get enough level by boosting the trim, input, and output levels on the MOTU Ultralite that I am using as a mixer. Again, I get plenty of level from FCP using the same output chain. I have the level all the way up on the source and using the +18 setting in the Kona ControlPanel. Also using "Lock input gain to unity", although that does not seem to affect the level. Not that it matters, but I have the Ultralite set to 48K. Any other controls I might be missing?

Thanks,
Robert A. Ober

Have you zeroed out your mixer with tone both from a new project in FCP and a tape with input passthrough? It sounds to me like something's not setup/calibrated properly.
