NTSC 29.97 to 1080p 23.98????
on Mar 20, 2008 at 8:44:05 pm

Sounds simple enough but I'm having some issues.

When I switch over my converted format to 1080p23.98 the actual output of the Kona is 1080i 59.94. Alternatively if I switch my converted format to 1080sf23.98 the actual output is 1080p 29.97!!!

Am I missing something here? I could layback at 1080i 59.94, but how would I get back to 1080p 23.98?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Joey

Answered in Highend.

but the simple matter is SD content is 29.97 on tape, the Kona cannot upconvert and remove pulldown from SD sources so your conversion is GOING to be 60i.

The kona is an excellent card, but one thing it is not a frame rate converter. If you need 1080 23.98, you will need to do the frame rate conversion elsewhere, then use the Kona to output @ 23.98.

Thanks Jeremy,
What would you suggest? I can always just pass this work along to a post house using a Teranex or something, but I would like to do it here if I could.

AE?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks again,
Joey

Does your footage have 3:2 pulldown in it or is it just straight NTSC? Why do you need 23.98? Just curious.

I work doing tv spots / trailers and home video work for the movie studios. Most of the footage I get is transferred from film, so therefore the 3:2 pulldown. There is the occasional straight ntsc shot on digi or betasp, but not much. Right now industry standard for HD is 23.98 (at least with my clients)

Sometimes I get the request to upconvert and was just looking for another way than to just send out to another post/creative house.

Well, to make your life easier, you should remove pulldown before you edit so that you are cutting @ 720x486 23.98. That way, you can upconvert to 1080 23.98, or if you lay off an NTSC master for a teranex upconvert, your program will have a consistent 3:2 pulldown cadence across the tape.

Make sense?

Jeremy

Makes complete sense! Thanks, I will test it out.

Joey, I should actually be more accurate when I say the Kona is not a frame rate converter. It just won't go from xx.xx to 23.98. It will add pulldown to 23.98 material on output (getting you to 29.97 & 59.94), and if you set it up properly, it can remove pulldown from certain sources on capture, but if your footage is captured @ 29.97 and you need to output 23.98, the Kona won't do this.

Sorry to list the inaccuracy.

Jeremy
