HDCAM master 23.98 to 29.97
on Jan 22, 2008 at 8:49:09 pm

I have a feature that was shot in HDCAM 23.98 and now I have a TV deal but according to their specs, they want a master that is HDCAM 29.97. Instead of having to master at 23.98 first then make a new master at 29.97 is there a way I can do it in FCP? I am using a KONA 2 card for this.

If I copy the sequence and put it into a 29.97 timeline, I know I'll probably have to render but will it make a difference in the final output quality? There's an quality check from the network so I don't want to delay any payment if there's something wrong.

If anyone has any input, will you give me some suggestions on how I can do this the correct way but maybe as a cheaper solution?

Thanks
Steven Escobar

Steven,

I used the Kona 2 often on the Nascar circuit but have forgotten much about it. I have a Kona 3 and you can just select the new frame rate in the Kona control panel. Without having the K2 here, do check the control panel. Set the FCP Easy setup at the 29.97 frame rate and the Kona should allow you to select the primary or secondary output at the rate you need. You can also dub from one HDCam to another converting the frame rate, just did that last week and it passed CBS QC.

Edit and master at 23.98 to preserve for future distribution.

24P to Film, 1080i, 25P/50i is easy.

Make your master HDCAM at 23.98, make the TV dub at 29.97.
You can have the Kona card play out the 23.98 material at 29.97 using the control panel. Or you can have the hdcam deck do it, F500/Srw-5500/5800, when making a dub.

Either way its just repeating frames.

If the tv viewer at home has a decent tv or processor, it will reverse the process back to 24p and your film will look as good as possible.

No, no, no. You guys got is all wrong. You work in NTSC TV you work in 29.97. Period.

Just kidding. I am just kidding.

Flip your Video output to 29.97 and the Kona2 will do the rest.

Handy dandy feature.

Re: HDCAM master 23.98 to 29.97 | AUDIO Sync?

How is the audio handled? Would there be any sync issues further downstream as the 23.98 video signal goes to 29.97?

The audio will (should) stay in sync.

There are several tabs on the kona CP.

Do you mean set the OUTPUT to 1080i29.97? If so, will the kona add 2-3 pulldown automatically as it plays a 1080p23.98 timeline?

Or, must you set the CODEC tab to 2:3:2:3 to get the pulldown added?

And, if you don't need to set the CODEC to 2:3:2:3 -- how can you disable this function? (What does this CP tab do, anyway?)

And, why would one need to choose the 29.97 FCP Preset if one sets the CP?

Don't worry about the KonaCP, this one you can do from FCP.

Use the View > Video Playback menu and change it to 1080i29.97 10bit or 8 bit or RGB, whatever you are using. Keep your timeline in 23.98.

THANK YOU! So, Kona can sense the timeline play rate is 23.98 and you are asking for 29.97 and so it auto-adds 2-3 pull-down?

[Steve Mullen] "So, Kona can sense the timeline play rate is 23.98"

Yes. In fact the Kona has magical spidey senses. Just don't stand around when it starts shooting webs. It's messy.

As far as pulldown, you can set the pulldown pattern in the KonaCP that you mentioned earlier. For the most part, I'd image you want 3:2 which is the default.
