procedure to export 1080p from 4x3 fcp project w/kona lhe card?
on Dec 11, 2007 at 10:27:57 pm

i'm just getting going on this and have only done a single test
and found i need to ask this.

i have a lot of timelapse material in, basically, 4x3 apsect
on a fcp timeline. when i export it to the aja 1080psf preset
it comes out stretched or scrunched, or whatever the smpte term
might be, such that the entire 4x3 frame is fit into the 1080
frame without cropping or pillarboxing.

what is the optimal procedure for creating either of these
formats (cropping the output or pillarboxing it) given my scenario?

thanks,
BabaG

Let me get this straight. You have this material in an SD 4x3 timeline, or are you simply putting this material in a 1080p timeline?

Either way, take the material into the 1080p timeline, remove attributes > distort, Then scale up the material until it fits. This will crop the top and bottom.

thanks jeremy. to make sure i have it right, the desired
procedure is not to select export settings, but rather to
place the material into a timeline with the settings of
the desired export format.

my material is actually something like 3k, or 3072x2304.
i currently have it on a timeline with those settings.
what i should do now is create a 1080psf timeline and
nest the 3072x2304 sequence into it, scaling as needed.

that will obviate the need for choosing export settings
as i can then export with "current settings" option. do
i have this all right?

thanks again,
BabaG

Well, if your goal is to further edit these pieces, you can use compressor to do the transcode and resize.

But if you simply want to export a movie of what you have, then yes. Nest the sequence in a 1080p sequence then do a scale. FCP will attempt to distort the footage into the proper aspect ratio. If you don't like that, you can remove the distort and do it yourself.

Does that make sense?

why?

you can use the 2K output and crop function on the K3 cards to functionally handle this output to 1080sf?

if you started with the 2K settings and change the image size parameters it should work.

question: the Odd images size? are you using digital stills or something from red?

thanks gary. how do i do any of this? where do i find settings for
what you are suggesting? i've always assumed i could do it but
posted to find out how. new to the whole process and kona card so
this will be my first go at this type of export procedure.

as to the odd size question, yes these are digital stills. i'm
working with various different things but mostly capturing 35mm
film and shooting timelapse. will eventually move to 4k but for
now the optics aren't optimized for that size. i can get better
than 2k for my original captures but not yet 4k. that's why i
settled on 3k as an interim solution; better quality than 2k and
reachable by my rigs.

thanks,
BabaG
