I/O HD questions
on Oct 13, 2007 at 10:05:41 pm

I just got my I/O HD

1) How come it's not working on my MAC G4 ?
2) Where do I plug my firewire drives in ?
3) I can't control my Beta UVW-1200 properly, can't AJA make a RS232 controller for my Beta 1200?
4) How come the I/O HD can't burn a Blu Ray disk ?
5) (I was going to make a smart ass comment about the Reference IN jack, but they figured out to terminate the input and make the Ref Out a buffered out, and not a looping out).
6) Can I trade in my Kona 3/Kona LHe that I bought 3 months ago?
7) Which is better - the I/O HD or the MOTU V3HD (I can't wait to see this one 3 weeks from now)
8) will the I/O HD drop in price soon?
9) my IO HD is not working. ProRes422HQ won't play back on my laptop.

The "lock unity audio" in the control panel is GREAT !

[Bob Zelin] "
1) How come it's not working on my MAC G4 ?"

Because your G4 probably doesn't have the correct RGB monitors connected to it. You should research an Acer 17" CRT Monitor, circa 1995, to ensure that the Io HD will work correctly. It requires the absolutely correct monitor for the computer it will be used on.

[Bob Zelin] "2) Where do I plug my firewire drives in ?"

We cannot answer that during family hour as many of the young calves might be reading in during this time.

[Bob Zelin] "3) I can't control my Beta UVW-1200 properly, can't AJA make a RS232 controller for my Beta 1200?"

If you push very VERY hard, you can insert a RS-422 cable into your RS232 port. It can help to have someone else hold the front of the machine so it doesn't fall out of the rack. A sledgehammer can give you more leverage.

[Bob Zelin] "4) How come the I/O HD can't burn a Blu Ray disk ?"

The Io HD supports HD DVD only. The Blue Laser of the Blu Ray burning process clashed horribly with the teal blue of the AJA logo. I understand it was a high level decision to ensure that fashion protocol not be violated.

[Bob Zelin] "5) (I was going to make a smart ass comment about the Reference IN jack, but they figured out to terminate the input and make the Ref Out a buffered out, and not a looping out)."

This is known as the "Zelin Effect."

[Bob Zelin] "6) Can I trade in my Kona 3/Kona LHe that I bought 3 months ago?"

No, but you should know that if you connect an Io HD to a Kona 3 system you will be able to edit in the new 24bit 8:8:8 Quad Link HD. You combine the Dual Link on the Kona 3 with the Dual Link on the Io HD and you bring out the true power of HD. 8:8:8 makes the Red camera look like 3/4".

[Bob Zelin] "7) Which is better - the I/O HD or the MOTU V3HD (I can't wait to see this one 3 weeks from now)"

The Io HD obviously as it was born from the mind of Nick Rashby. He is the "holy grail" of video equipment and after seeing him in all his glory on the huge screen at the Apple NAB event, it's hard to doubt anything that springs from his mind.

[Bob Zelin] "8) will the I/O HD drop in price soon?"

As soon as the new 16GB Io HD Touch is available, the price of the Io HD will drop to $299. The original will still be full price and it will be designated the "Classic."

[Bob Zelin] "9) my IO HD is not working. ProRes422HQ won't play back on my laptop."

Be sure it is set up correctly on your laptop. Press Start > Programs > AJA Folder > Io Folder > Io HD Folder > Vista Folder > NTSC Folder > Pro Res Folder > I'm sorry, what was the question again?

And where in the world do you connect the rabbit ears?

Good night Chet. Good night David.

I can't seem to get it to work on my grape colored iMac with the daisy sticker on the side. Do you think it would help if I move the sticker? Right now it's on the right about 1/4 down from the top. Should I move the sticker to the left? A little further down perhaps? Maybe if I tried a tangerine iMac?

Also, I can't get it to connect to my Quadra..

Try the Pink One. Mmmmmmmm, pink iMac.........

Did you pick up the AJA HD24IO65QUADRA2615 Io HD to Quadra converter? It's Offline Photo JPEG only but it's supposed to work great!

Mr. Zelin- Thank you, thank you....Thank you! Mondays can sometimes be tuff but you've brightened it considerably.

Now if I can just figure out why the picture is frozen in FCP viewer!

Maybe it's just too cold? Try warming up the color balance.

Arnie- Great idea! I'll crank the chroma. You know... like CSI Miami.

howzits insert edit accuracy. i prefer clip to come in 1 frame early and repeat 1st frame at least 3 or 4 frames. i'll have to read the manual to see if this is offered.

Why would you want the frame to repeat on an insert edit? This is not offered by any NLE I know of.

The accuracy of the IoHD is the same as the hardware based Kona cards.

hi Gary
this is what's known as a smart ass remark - take it in context of the rest of the thread.
(been having some insert hell with our decklinks)
