720p/60 question for Walter
on Aug 24, 2007 at 2:46:34 pm

Hi Walter, I noticed in a post you made in the FCP forum yesterday that your favorite format is 720p/60. I'm wondering what codec you're using to digitize and edit and why you feel that's the best?
I've got a Mac Pro 2.66 with a Kona LHe. I shoot with a JVC GY-HD110u (usually in 24p) and input from a BR-HD50u deck through a convergent designs HD-Connect MI into the HD-SDI.
As most are... I'm always looking for the best setting to produce the best content. Obviously on a budget.

I appreciate any input your willing to share!

Thanks, John

the JVC 110 camera only shoots a max of 30 fps, so the 720p60 output has 2:2:2:2 duplicate frames for its cadence.

one question
why not just come in component from the HD50u deck to the LH card??

Well... Going in analog component was going to be what we were going to do. I guess I figured for $600 bucks I might as well use the HDMI out of the deck and use the HD-SDI into the LHe. Plus it frees up the analog inputs for other things.
If you have any thoughts on a better way, I'm all ears. As I make the switch to the 720 world, I'm definitely looking for any input that will help in developing the best set-up.

Thanks, John

seems like it could be an issue at some point thinks to think about...

HDMI is only 8bit with stereo audio
Analog component is 10bit with up to 4 tracks of audio (8 over AES)

delays in the HDMI / HDSDI conversion may cause audio drift....

DVCPro HD 720/60. It's the cleanest and sharpest 720 material we get. It's extremely versatile since we can pull a beautiful slo mo by using the Frame Rate converter to convert to 24fps.

I know nothing about that camera, sorry. We only work with Sony and Panasonic formats.

Thanks for the reply Walter. Have you worked much with the Apple ProRes much? How would that compare with the DVCPro HD?

Just a little. Not so overly impressed yet with it that we'd drop the DVCPro HD workflow.

A quick question - ran into a big problem with this about a month ago.

If you're working with a 60p time line or a 59.94 - how do you get that to lay back on a 29.97 tape? I would change the time code base of the time line, but it would want to render everything? Thanks

Ever check to that your timebase is actually 29.97 in FCP?

and that 59.94p is actually a direct conversion to 60i = ( ie: 59.94 fields) = 29.97 frames.
