I had asked AJA support to help clear up my issues with what setting, IRE 7.5 or IRE 0,
to use when digitizing analog video through component input on my LH.
Rudy of AJA Support has kindly provided the answers.
I quote from his email to me today (I hope I haven't broken any board rules by doing so).
You are correct the black level setting in the control panel is basically
for Japan levels (standard definition).
First, let me start off with the black Levels for the various analog video formats:
* The black level for NTSC, Y/C (S-video) and Component Betacam 525 is 7.5 IRE.
* The black level for Component SMPTE HD and SD is 0 IRE.
* The black level for NTSC-J, Y/C-J and Betcam-J is 0 IRE.
If the Kona analog video input and or output format is set to any of the 525
7.5 IRE formats which are: NTSC, Y/C, or Component Betcam 525. AND the black
level in the control panel is set to 0 IRE, then the video format is treated
as Japan-level video.
It is best to leave the black level at 7.5 IRE and let the Kona
automatically adjust the black level based on the video format. The only
exception is with Japan level video formats.
In regards to your DVD player: You should be using the Component SMPTE video
format. The Kona automatically treats the black level as 0 IRE regardless of
the black level setting in the control panel.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else of I need to
