Octo Cores announced on the Apple Site
on Apr 4, 2007 at 1:06:32 pm

As someone noted in the Final Cut Pro forum, the Octo Cores are now out. Not in any hurry to buy one though because Leopard and the next Studio are not out yet. Would prefer to do a clean re-start with the new machine.

Base price is $4,000 with 1GB RAM for the Octo Core.

[walter biscardi] "Would prefer to do a clean re-start with the new machine."

That's the beauty of multiple drives in the same machine, you can now have a Leopard drive and a Tiger drive. I did the exact same thing when transitioning from Panther to Tiger. Two separate boot drives, two separate FCP installs and two separate driver installs.

It worked great. I still have my trusty Dual2 G5 humming away. 8 cores seems like it'll be better, but who knows.

I am due for an upgrade, but waiting until NAB seems like the logical thing to do. I really really wanted to hit the buy button though.

Yep, but I really don't want to go through that right now. Our Mac Pro Quad 3.0 is extremely stable right now so why make the jump to the Octo Core when nothing out there takes advantage of it? I'll wait for Leopard and the new FCP Studio to start shipping and then I'll purchase the machine.

Back away with that itchy trigger finger! If you're going to NAB I'm sure those will be the machines all over the show floor.

I unfortunately can not make it to NAB as i will be knee deep in the stuff, mired in HD renders and generally working for a living. Vegas sounds nice though, it's supposed to flurry here today in Chicago, welcome to Spring! I'd bet money the octo core would render faster.

I really shouldn't be going either due to schedule changes here but we've made a lot of commitments already for the show.

I'm right there with you. Still running my Dual2 G5s. I can't do the "buy every machine that comes out" mentality. I'd rather put the money in software.
Going from a Dual 500 G4, to a Dual 2 G5...I'm definitely ready for the big upgrade again... but its wise to see what NAB will produce!

I honestly don't feel like I'm missing much by sticking with the G5 other than speed... but I'm hopeful that an Octo Core, Leopard, FCP6 combo will be the right combo for an exciting upgrade.

Absolutely the right frame of mind. Like I said before, I think it's better to wait for Leopard and the new FCP to be shipping before making the switch.

Of course, this will be interesting. Leopard is not out yet, but it has been shown publicly, so I have to believe that all the Apple workstations will be running Leopard at the show.

There is plenty of software that will take advantage of the eight cores. Any software that is decently multi-threaded will automatically take advantage of the additional cores. The biggest boost in the arm will come with AE 7 married to Nucleo Pro. It will be off the hizzle! FCP Studio apps should also take advantage of the extra horsepower.

Since Photoshop is really a RAM strapped application, you won't see much improvement with it.

While it is great the Apple finally came to the quad-core party, it is unfortunate that they chose not to rev the motherboard. It would be nice if we had more lanes for PCI Express. I wouldn't mind it being rackmountable, while we are at it.

For those interested, the Dual-core Intel-Macs are upgradable to Quad-Core. They chips are pin-compatible and do not require any motherboard modifications. You can use off-the-shelf chips. The bad news is that the new chips strain and possibly overtax the Power Supply. Thus, I think the other change to the new box is a bigger Power Supply.

See y'all at NAB.

I need to get the 8 core machine to make me a better editor. I seemed to be working slowly all day, just thinking about caressing the innards of those steamy 8 cores.

How the hell do my clients expect me to work on this POS slow as hell quad 2.66?

Render an uncompressed timeline in FCP on your macpro and see only 30% cpu-power used.
Who needs 8 cores just to watch them sleeping away?

We seem to have the same problem here, though I'm starting to think, the slowdown happened about the same time we installed a Nintendo Wii in the shop..........
