i figured out his 'secret sauce' that he might post in the future. It restricts max chroma color to 128 rgb so that you can raise saturation and all color values get normalized up to that point , kinda like audio's multiband compression. I got the idea from the ceo of ARRI about 18% color. my pic looks 90% like the 'after' shot. I made a preset, thx mixinglight!

restrict max chroma values to clip at 18% reflective or 128/128/128 rgb. set adjustment layer to color mode. now when you raise saturation, all colors will get raised and compressed at the same time. reflects the subtractive nature of film and paint.
