Maybe some one can forward me to some useful information but I have a bit of a mental block on this.
I have been working closely with our colorist who is learning himself although has allot of experience image retouching. The grades we have been creating can look really good on his calibrated screen and mac screens but horrible on some windows screens. We are creating most of our content for internet so allot of people will be viewing on budget monitors.
for me it looks like the problem is mainly how the blacks are lifted which can also lead to compression artifacts showing up in the shadows. considering we like to wash out our grade often this creates some problems.
using wide gamut monitors, P3/Rec. 709, gamma 2.2/1.8? A lot can be different. You grade should consider these, and any technical lut transforms should be decided by the final playback devices's specifications.
