Ultra quiet 2 bay RAID
on Apr 26, 2014 at 8:54:12 pm

Hello.
I am looking for an external 2 bay RAID0 array, USB3 + e-sata interface, that is really quiet. I already own several 2, 4 and 5 bay arrays and NAS, but their fans are all too noisy for me for anything that's not backup or storage. I own a WD My Book Studio, fanless, that is really quiet, but it does not have USB3. I need it to keep on editing AVCHD source media with FCPX on a MBP when I'm not in my studio. Any tip?
Thank you

Hi Fabrizio,

I Know the problem. I’m afraid, you will not find an ultra quiet RAID0-array with built in fans. You colt have a look at the Seagate Portable Hard drive Backup Plus Fast with 2 Hard drives in it (2 x 2,5“ 2TB-= 4 TB). But it comes only with USB 3.

An alternative could be an external enclosure, where you put your own hard drives in it. I think of Akitio (= Inxtron) Taurus Mini Super-S3 LCM., that is for 2,5“ hard drives.

http://www.inxtron.com/multi-bay-raid-enclosures/taurus-mini-super-s3

If you need the speed of RAID 0, why don’t you buy some SSD-drives? The bigger ones now have a capacity of 1 TB.

Greetings from Bavaria

Franz

Thank you Franz.
I had found an interesting set of 2x2.5" drives, bus powered, USB 3.0 + FW800, fanless: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/EliteALmini/RAID/eSATA_FW800_FW400_...
But the seagate seems to be a perfect solution. The only problem would be that I could not use the FW800 port on my 2011 MBP for editing on a train or in a remote location without the need to plug my Belkin adapter like I would with the OWC. However, I'll update the laptop very soon and the problem will be gone.
Instead of working on a single RAID0 array, plugging it alternatively between the MP and the MBP, I could build and keep sync'ed the media folder, and exchange the library containing the project. I already run some test and it seems to work fine, FCPX recognizing the files on different drives without the need of reconnecting them. The USB 3.0 would provide enough speed, and 4 Tb would be more than adequate for my standard project (2 Tb would be good as well, 1 Tb a bit to tight). It's a bit more tricky than just plugging the array, but it should work, and the bus powering should make it very portable. I hope temperature issues are not affecting reliability too much.
Kind regards
