Curious commenting problem...

I was going to comment on Aindreas post below, but oddly, all my response buttons are missing for that post. All the interface is presenting me this morning is Post Index and Quote. And Quote does nothing.

Odd.

Know someone who teaches video editing in elementary school, high school or college? Tell them to check out http://www.StartEditingNow.com - video editing curriculum complete with licensed practice content.

Same here, though just on Aindreas' post obviously.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "realistically, I'm on moderation too. "

I don't normally talk about administrative matters publicly, but this one is a bit interesting.

I was about to say, "You're absolutely NOT on moderation. I just doublechecked this myself" when I decided to look closer.

It turns out that you have TWO accounts, with different email addresses. I'd been checking your most recent one, from 2006, and indeed, NOT moderated.

Ah, but the one from 2002, THAT one was still moderated -- but that was only because I didn't think to check what I assumed was an address you were no longer using to log in.

SO, for the record, you were not INTENDED to be moderated, and are not now on EITHER of your accounts.

We caught up now? LOL

Wilson, you guys have caught, and corralled any amount of sewage. not least from me.

There is a crazy issue with behaviour all over - as an agnostic I am better held with the notion of my remarks being restrained by peers than by god.

There is damn all issue with moderation as long as you trust it to your allowed and applied peers.
we're doing that - and no one should have any issue with it.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "broccoli tim. broccoli. we both know what that's about."

I reserve the right to place you back on moderation if you keep up this nonsense.

[Aindreas Gallagher] " the Lestrygonians?"

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume Joyce rather than Homer.

Speaking of moderation, Joyce's Ulysses was serialized in The Little Review, an American literary magazine, starting in 1918. Part 1 of the Lestrygonians section (the eighth episode) was published in January 1919, but seized by the US Postal Service because of complaints that it was obscene. Trial and hilarity ensue.

So if by invoking the Lestrygonians you hoped to raise once more the spectre of flamboyant Irish wordsmiths reined in by zealous Americans of delicate sensibility, touché.

lord but google it is the shortcut eh? there are no tricks left in time. You cut to the quick there Wilson.
Indeed the father had written joyce confiscated by franciscan friars in 53'. Laestrygonians indeed, as in america that day in 18'. Although precious little is said about the welsh in 22'.

so no surprises there.

I can only imagine that means you're an informer who can only digest broccoli laced with seafood?

[Gary Huff] "I can only imagine...."

I was just about to ask why you haven't posted on the newly unjammed thread. LOL

[Aindreas Gallagher] "lord but google it is the shortcut eh? "

Now, now. Long before I was at the COW, before I was a corporate weasel, even before I was a video production company owner, my job immediately before that was managing bookstores for Barnes & Noble. I can see Ulysses on my shelf from here. BOTH Ulysseses. (Is that the plural for Ulysses?)

For that matter, I can see Nora: The Real Life of Molly Bloom, by Brenda Maddox. A fantastic biography of Nora Barnacle, Joyce's not-quite wife. The real revelation here is Joyce cribbed a lot of the style of Ulysses from her letters! If you're looking for the link between Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man (given to me by an English professor for whom I was a teaching assistant) and Ulysses -- well, her name is Nora.

(Also my wife's name. Her knowledge of Joyce surpasses mine, to be sure, as I know yours does, Aindreas. I'm merely a fan.)

re: The Little Review and the obscenity trial, one of my long suits as an undergraduate was Ezra Pound, who was responsible for arranging the serialization of Ulysses in TLR. (Pound had his own run-ins with the literary law of course.)

My longer long suit was Hart Crane, a too-little known American poet who also published regularly there. Don't mess with me on American poetry and literary criticism between the wars, son.

There are other writers I read in the TLR, notably Sherwood Anderson (I LOVE his Winesburg, Ohio stories), and Emma Goldman, who was first widely published in TLR's earliest issues. Both the journal and the trial were well-known to me long before Adobe was founded. (Heavens, perilously close to on topic there for a moment. My apologies.) Remarkable how startling some if it still is today, 100 years later.

Wait, what? When did 1914 become 100 years ago???

See now? Isn't this fun?

[Edited to add a bit about Nora, both of them.]

[And again to note, this was more of a response than was called for, and makes me sound ridiculous...but I've been kicking around these forums since 1996, and I'm not sure that I've ever had a chance to talk about books before, even in passing jest. The whole video career thing just kind of happened. I always assumed I'd be teaching literature or some other liberal arts folderol.

Next stop: "Is James Joyce Upset That He Doesn't Have His Own Debate Forum?"]

Good lord. Sure Tim, I never shagging well got past 'Portrait of the Artist' for God's sake. Either of ye would beat me into a cocked hat.

the internet: she be full of bluffers, chancers and blackguards.

Just to add - folderol. That there is a tasty nugget of word.

For reasons unknown to me, the post was flagged as Read Only. Entirely unintentional, I assure you. In any case, it's back open for business.

Apologies! Carry on!
