Google (Youtube) is attempting to strong-arm independent music labels into terms less favourable than those they offer major labels:

"I don’t think we know just where artists will land in this new world order. But we know the streaming model is coming with a vengeance, and that companies like Spotify, SoundCloud, Beats/Apple, and now Google will be gatekeepers. One major question is just how those gatekeepers behave. And that depends on how the people making the music – and, perhaps, regulators like Europe – respond.
[...]
YouTube is ubiquitous enough that not being there could be damaging. ... That’s where the power of an Internet monoculture becomes so potentially damaging.
[...]
Google ... appears to be on the record promising it will ban music labels and artists on YouTube."

Historically, music distribution trends have informed film and video distribution trends, so this could be the beginning of more "closed" services.

Franz.

Fiat currency thing works relatively well, don't you think?

How can you every truly own something that doesn't exist in a physical form?

Well the relatively recent court decision in the US is letting ISP's limit access and set data caps. So we have a data size, they advertise bandwidth in Mb/S, add a dash of middle school algebra and we have converted the unit of measure into time. Congrats guys, we're back in the days of AOL.
