Adobe rebranded to CC line
on May 6, 2013 at 5:09:27 pm

So it's Adobe Premiere Pro Creative Cloud now or CC for short. I guess that tells us exactly where the company is going.

I did notice that the Adobe Photoshop splash screen changed after an update this week from the Cloud. I guess that was the first of the software to roll out?

I have a sneaking suspicion, we'll see their market share drop off as people with Licenses, (I have two Master Collection CS6), won't jump to the cloud and will stick with CS6.

Ultimately $50/month is expensive- long term. It's like leasing a car vs buying.

[Warren Eig] "I have a sneaking suspicion, we'll see their market share drop off as people with Licenses"

It may actually be harder for them to get a peg of market adoption as the CC now allows people to purchase for a month, turn it off for 2 months, then back on for a project, etc. So there may be continually varying levels of buy in.

If I can make a FCPX comparison, maybe Adobe, like Apple did with FCPX, is targeting a broader more consumer-based market where they're less concerned with the everyday professional and more concerned with the "we just have to make a quick video and post it on our website/news feed/social media page." So maybe the "small" minority of us who make up the day-in-day-out usage are a less attractive market?

Provided they are moving away from perpetual licenses, I would really like somebody from Adobe to actually state their reasoning for moving that way entirely. Why maintaining both would be bad business. The CC has great potential, but it's about twice as expensive than my current setup — perpetual license + 2 year maintenance upgrades.

Just from my perspective and being at NAB, that's a minority opinion. The majority of folks I'm talking to or reaching out to me love the concept of pay one fee and get everything they make. I know this forum is getting a lot of negative traffic, but even where I sit with 7 machines, CC is going to work pretty well here.

[walter biscardi] "but even where I sit with 7 machines, CC is going to work pretty well here."

Is the CC a less expensive option for you running with 7 seats? I'm not sure how you did upgrades before or how long you've been on the Adobe bus....all of which factors into how much you paid for upgrades.

[walter biscardi] "The majority of folks I'm talking to or reaching out to me love the concept of pay one fee and get everything they make."

I think this is a valid marketing point. Strictly from my standpoint, there's no added value in having access to Dreamweaver, InDesign, Muse, PhoneGap Build, etc. I don't use them for what I do and won't (likely) be learning them anytime soon. So those apps have no value for me currently and I'd rather not pay for them all things being equal.

But all things aren't equal, which is why we've been having this discussion recently! :-) Ultimately, I don't think it's the end of the world if CC is the only option. It's a change, sure. But I don't see any other NLE that I want to be working on right now. I'm not a fan of paying more money for a product, but Adobe's feature set seems to outstrip the other NLE's for the type of work we do.

It's great...until they remove you from the "introductory" rate and push everyone at full price, and with a lot of programs/apps that might not be used (I'm in video production; not web, printing, etc... I don't need anything outside what I currently use, video production suite). So in a year, we'll all be paying $59.00/mo (or $708/yr) for a lot of programs sitting unused. (I can currently upgrade now at $375/yr) Not to mention if you ever close up shop and have to re-open a project later on down the road... Really, not cool at all....

BTW, Tom, a week or two ago you posted about dynamic linking between Pr and AE. You mentioned that it could also be done with the rendered out movie from AE, by checking the "include project link" tab. I had seen that, and used it, but never realized the potential. (That one slipped past...LOL) Thanks for that! Made my day!!

CC is by the month as well, so if you need to open something down the road, activate for one month and shut it down.

I'm liking these two nuggets especially from CC:

• You can now share work and get feedback from your community throughout the creative process—including posting work in progress directly to Behance from right within Photoshop

• A new Creative Cloud desktop app to manage install and manage your desktop software, manage your files, get feedback on your projects on Behance, and keep track of just about everything in your creative universe—all in a single activity stream

[walter biscardi] "CC is by the month as well, so if you need to open something down the road, activate for one month and shut it down."

How many times have you done a minor quick "tweak" for a customer and not billed them for it? I know it's against the rules and all, but every once in a blue moon an old client might call and ask to change their phone number or something. If I didn't own a copy of the software, I'd have to charge them. Yes, it's a little bit extreme, but the case and point exists.

As for Behance, I don't use it. I'm not saying I couldn't or anything, I've just not needed to. Most of my work is company confidential, and I can't show it to the world, other than highlights. As for one company managing all my software, project files, etc...well, not to be Orwellian, but I gots a bad feeling about that... IF they ever got hacked...If they ever went down.... I prefer to keep stuff spread out on servers, drives and apps. If ever one fails (and it does happen), it's not the end of the world. :)

The turnaround in both new software, new collaboration and even just quicker updates are really what have us excited here. And if you really HATE this concept of cloud delivery, well it's just a matter of time before everyone has the same concept in place. It's just the changing nature of the business and quite honestly I'm pretty happy with the changes.

I wonder how many of the people whining the loudest here are actual working on something? I'm jumping in here between reinstalling graphics card drivers (which I somehow screwed up), and restriping 13 audio beds (which I'm trying to avoid). I understand and respect disagreement, but for God's sake let's not beat it to death! Now someone's talking about assembling lawyers for a class action law suit - good luck with that. You generally have to have an "injury" to sue over...
