The amazing new machine that I'll be running Avid and Motion on, but not Adobe.

Take a look: http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/

BTW, you most likely won't have to connect a GPU through Thunderbolt 2.

[Russ Johnson] "The amazing new machine that I'll be running Avid and Motion on"

What's so amazing. No internal flexibility, no invidia cards, a morass of thunderbolt and external expansion boxes with cables everywhere - no price yet, no max ram announced, not even sure if it's capable of dual CPU yet - are you one of the folks that waits on line every time a new iphone comes out?

And only 12 cores max! After all this time, Apple is still not offering the 16 cores I have on my XEON windows machine

In the brave new world of video, GPU's are more important than processor cores

I Thinks its pretty. Now if its under 2k I might get into it and not a hackintosh.

I'd be willing to bet that the price of entry will be about $6k.

If so, then I expect Hackintosh will become the new black.

My prediction:

Low end - $2950
Middle - $3950
High - $4950

Even then I expect Hackintosh will become the new black.

Pretty much agree with that, but I'd put the high end configure at 6.

I don't see how it possibly CAN'T be $6k starting out. It seems like the 12-core Xeon and dual GPU will be standard, and the maxed out iMac is $3k. Plus, 1TB SSD will probably be the norm.

When you cost out the parts you may be right, but I think they'll have to be careful. External expansion will be expensive. Plus I think the small size and limited internal expansion may be a psychological barrier for many. The industrial design is cute but I don't think most of the folks who need this kind of power care. A lot depends on how it compares to other options when it ships.

Mmmmm, the firepros inside the MP are the w9000, wich cost more or less 3K each. So, the higher end MP should be more or less 10k.

Random thoughts:

1) It really does look like a Braun KF20

2) Price will be everything.

3) Craig Federighi is pretty funny. Phil Schiller is not.

Not if 3D is part of your workflow. Cinema 4D is a major component to my video workflow, and the added cores save me huge time.

Mac is not officially behind in that regard

Good point, if there's a lot of 3D in your workflow then this isn't the machine your looking for

Can you point me to Apple specs that explicitly say it can only accommodate one processor? On their new Mac Pro preview site it says "With configurations offering up to 12 cores of processing power..." Currently to get 12 cores of processing power you need two 6-core processors. And the current Xeons max out at 8 cores. Are there 12-core Xeons on the horizon?

Shawn, my guess is that they are using the upcoming E5-2600 v2 Xeon, which does have up to 12 cores on a single CPU.

If the Mac Pro tube supported multiple processors, I would expect to see configurations up to 16 cores with currently shipping Xeons and 24 cores with soon-to-be-released Xeons.

Well, that would be a little disappointing, but Apple is claiming it's "up to" 2X faster than the current Mac Pro. I guess we'll see what they define as the "current" Mac Pro. My current Mac Pro is a 12 Core model (2x6 cores).

On the bright side, maybe one 12-core processor will be less expensive than two 6-core procs.

And in their preview demo, there really only seems to be room for one socket.

Adobe better start coding for Dual AMD GPUs. I have to say I like that part of it. Looks extremely powerful for video. For anyone moving on from Adobe, looks quite attractive, especially FCPX, naturally. Aperture should fly too, my preferred photo app. Wonder what quality comes out of the HDMI 1.4 port? Thunderbolt 2: Apple or someone is going to have to provide enclosures for storage and external PCIe as well. Still can use my AJA card if necessary, but Thunderbolt T-Tap or Blackmagic for monitoring cheaper. AJA ioXT for acquisition will work fine. My Kona LHi is happy in my 2010 Mac Pro anyway for bringing stuff in off tape. Looks like up to 64GB removable 1866 Mhz RAM with 3rd party possible. 32GB sticks would allow up to 128, but for my purposes 32GB total is plenty.

All in all, I'm glad to see a very high performance machine from Apple. No need for Windows for me, ever. With a 2010 and a 2012 Mac Pro Tower on the way to back it up for CS6 and the rest of my current software, and this next year, I should be set. I can adjust to the new model. Can Adobe? I hope so. Love their software, but truly won't rent it. Will be learning FCPX just in case. Sounds like an upgrade to X is coming when the new Mac Pro releases.
