Has anyone used the Atomos Ronin with a BMCC?
Any concerns or issues?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim, I could be wrong but I thought the BMCC records to it's own SSD internal drive with a higher resolution then the supported resolutions of the Atomos Ronin supports.

Supported Formats: In/Out for Atomos Ronin
HD 1080i60, 1080i59.94, 1080i50, 1080p30, 1080p25, 1080p24, 1080p23.98, 1080pSF23.98, 1080pSF24, 1080pSF25, 1080pSF30, 720p60, 720p59.94, 720p50, SD 480i, 486i, 576i

Records 4K (3840x2160) & HD (1920x1080) for the BMCC

In less you mean the one with the 2.5K Image Sensor. The 2.5k camera records 12-bit RAW, ProRes and DNxHD Formats to it's own SSD.

I am thinking of getting the 4k BMCC. I mostly shoot weddings and not sure if BMCC would be good for that kind of work.

So I do not see a need to use the Atomos Ronin with that camera. Let me know if I am wrong.

Paul

Using the HD-SDI out of the BMCC, you can record to anything. The Atomos Ronin should have no problem working as a recorder for the camera. However, I am curious, what are you trying to gain with the Ronin? Lower ProRes bit rates? As stated, the recording at ProRes is very similar especially if ProRes HQ is the goal.

Hi Matthew.
Thanks for the reply and so sorry for just now responding.
The reason for the Ronin or any external recording device in our application is strictly for redundancy.

If only for redundancy I then would suggest something less expensive such as a Ninja Star. Unless you need the screen of the Atomos. Even then though the Ronin is a large unit meant more for studios. I would sooner look at the Ninja or Samurai Blade for camera mounting.

We will be shooting a live concert of a comedians stand-up and music parodies using 5 BMCC. 3 on sticks, 1 on a jib and 1 hand-held (wireless). We will record on each camera and feed video via SDI to the Ronins as backups located in an iso room off stage where our director will be calling shots. It will not be a live switched event but he will be calling shots as if it were. We will also have an assistant with him monitoring the Ronins as we want the camera operators focused on their moves and not having to monitor a second device. Everything will then be produced in post. Make sense??

Makes perfect sense. Do you have the cameras already? Sounds like the Blackmagic Studio Camera might work well for this situation.

Believe me we considered it but we opted for the larger sensor.
We are also configuring the BMCC based on an article from Marco Solorio using ENG lenses.
So far very promising but have run into a couple of problems that you will see in my new thread.

Ah yes! I've seen that build in person at a NY Blackmagic show. It is very cool indeed. Marco did a great job on that. Okay, will wait for the new thread to continue.

After testing the Ronin seems to work perfectly.

Also, we have run into a couple of interesting issues that I will be starting a new thread and would appreciate your input Matthew.

Thanks for your help!
