JVC ProHD camcorder output to SDI
on Mar 3, 2010 at 9:54:21 pm

Hi... im currently using JVC ProHD camcorders ( GY-HD110 ) and if anyone can help on what is the best way to get an output to SDI... The outputs on the camcorder now are only IEEE 1394/HDV/DV , component , and composite. Im planning on filming in 720p and the feed will be sent to a video mixer via SDI... thanks for any help!

I have that exact camera and use the BlackMagic Analog to SDI miniconverter. Works flawlessly!

And at $470, it's about $500 cheaper than the AJA.

Have you encountered the issue of powering your Black Magic via anton bauer power tap and not having the unit operate properly with a fully charged Lithium Ion battery? I had heard some discussion about the unit needing constant 12v power supply and not a flexible range of power that is encountered with using the camera battery as its power source. Curious as to your workflow and application with the device as I am considering a purchase.

Thanks,

Marty

Nope. Since my cameras are all stationary (on tripods in our church's sanctuary) I run all A/C power.

Thanks alot guys.. but i was also wondering if i would get better quality converting HDV through the IEEE 1394 port to HD-SDI, since there both digital, instead of from component... what do you guys think?

You DEFINITELY want to convert from the component out -- it's uncompressed analog. If you go Firewire out, your video is going to get reduced in quality a bit due to the HDV compression and it will come out with a significant delay.

only component!!!
by firewire reduced color sample rate to 4:2:0 (pal) and bit rate reduced to 19 Mbs, and imposition HDV codec (terrible)

by component (analog or digital) you have color sample rate 4:2:2 (broadcast) full band of quality, and NO codec.

After converter you should be connect to NANO Flash.

Wow! $2895 for a Nano Flash? You could buy a whole Mac Pro workstation for that. ;-)

I don't know why you put up with that. But then I guess we Americans have a reputation for "handling" out of control taxes. ;-)
