HD 200 digitizing problem
on Dec 5, 2008 at 2:50:58 am

We have an HD 200 and just stepped into a major problem with digitizing. We have digitized off of the camera in the 24p mode about 7 or 8 times since we bought it all without incident. The camera had to go back to JVC for service; just shoot something the other day, hooked it up and ran into a boatload of problems. First we could not get it to ID and second when it would ID it would not digitize the clips. It takes about 3-4 sec of material loses a frame and starts a new clip. We are basically stuck to get the material into the system and edit. Any suggestions...Running FCP 6.0.5, digitizing using the native HDV on the MAC with a Kona LH card for final output. Thanks in advance.

Big problems is right. If you can, go back to FCP 6.0 no 60p but your camera will connect and you can cut your 24p stuff. Otherwise use your kona to import from the component outs of the HD200. It's really inconvenient for FCP users right now who have ProHD footage on tape. Good luck, there are many who share your pain.

Thank Johnny. A few questions.
How far do you have to step with FCP? Back to 6.0.1. I believe that was the software version that we were running before we unknowingly made an upgrade.
Do you have a recommendation for a convertor that can let us take in the signal SDI on the Kona Card.
We have something that is shot on 60p. What coded would you use to digitize the footage into the system? Normally we edit with the native HDV and then export to a 720 x 480 timeline because our local stations still use Beta SP as the means of spot delivery.
Thanks again, it helps to get a definitive answer. We have been pulling our hair out.

yes 6.0.1 might work but you may as well try with 6.0 first just to be safe.
As far as sdi into the kona, convergent designs makes a coverter and of course aja does as well. I would capture to something better than hdv, dvcprohd or prores 422. If you don't need to deliver hd than just capture to prores 422 SD. Hope this helps. FCP 6.0 doesn't have prores to my knowledge..... Might be wrong though.
Good luck.

The stepback to 6.0 may be a problem, but I am going to use dvcprohd just to get us through the shots we have.

For future workload, some of which is shot 24p. Is it better to just get the disks out and reload the 6.0 and stay with that? Does anyone know if this problem with the JCV camera is going to be resolved?

Here's some info from JVC on capturing with Final Cut. Sometimes, when using FC to capture, the capture is stopped by Final Cut part way through the capture. Here's the reason from JVC. Seems that the BR HD50 deck will fix a bad frame of video when playing but it is not fixed in the firewire output, only on composite and component out is the frame repaired. So when FC gets to that frame, it see no info or partial info and stops the capture. The fix is to get an AJA or Kona card and capture off the Component out of the 50 deck. The software in the 50 deck repairs the frame and Aja or Kona card can capture it using FC Pro Res as a capture setting. Problem solved with the addition of the Aja or Kona card. Footage is still captured via the digital component out of the 50 deck and looks the same, according to JVC.

Gotta love it when the only solution is to buy another company's product. They better get cracking on this capture issue from decks and cameras or current users are going to bail out to something else. Thanks for that information as it lets everyone know that JVC isn't bringing any solutions to their current problems. I have to admit the new Panny HMC150 is superb.

"Digital component"? Component is, analogue. HDSDI is digital and typically uses a single coaxial cable but the HD50U does not have SDI (the HD250 does however)-the only digital output besides FW is HDMI.
