Best Format to Convert to ProRes422...?
on Apr 16, 2013 at 12:40:26 pm

Hello all,

I have made a video with After Effects on a PC. I want to transport the file to someone with a Mac who can convert to QuickTime Prores422, but my question is, what is the best format for me to give to a Mac user so that they get the best results when making the conversion? Baring in mind I am using a PC.

The full uncompressed size of my vid is 16gb (*.avi), do you think I should try and deliver this version, or could I get away with some compression to another format with minimal loss of quality so it will still look sharp when converting to ProRes?

Example - If I give them an MPEG or an h264 will they work better than an AVID encoded QuickTime file? Sorry if this all sounds a bit pathetic, but I am hampered by using a PC and confused the the numerous codecs that are available to me, NONE of which are actually useful! I guess I'm trying to ascertain if certain formats convert better than others.

Many thanks

Tom

Uncompressed is an option or Motion JPEG. You could also use a DNxHD codec in Quicktime format. The Mac user will need to download the Avid codecs (free) and install them.

Hi tom,

I'm old school and render almost everything out of AE using the animation codec. Some other folks will probably have better solutions. Do not use H.246 or anything else that has an efficient encoding algorithm because it will not re-compress very well. You will want to maintain as much resolution of the native file as possible.
