AVCHD 8 or 16 bpc? easy beginner question, looked everywhere online.

Hello everyone!

I have a beginner-question. I shot with my canon xa20 (4:2:0) in AVCDH.
I transcode it in media encoder to apple prores 422, but I want to colour grade it later on.
Should I convert it with maximum render depth and choose 8bpc or 16bpc?
Does it help with colour grading to transcode it in 16bpc, although the videomaterial is 8 bit?

Thank you so much in advance!

anything that is 8 bit stays 8 bit unless it is degrained by neatvideo or debanded.
if you changed the gamma, and you need to ungrade the gamma later, you need 10 bit or higher. 16 bit is overkill unless you need 100% lossless TIFF/DPX/PNG image sequences. Even prores 12 bit or arriraw 12 bit is enough. 16bit can hold raw in linear light format for cgi. A high bitrate wavelet codec like 12 bit Apple ProRes 4444 XQ or 444, or even 422 HQ could be enough for multigenerational grading.

Thank you Chris for your anwer.

My only problem is that my school demands apple prores 422.
If I transcode it, my only options are 8bpc or 16bpc..
So I have to choose between the two of them.
Would you advise me 8bpc or 16bpc?

Kind regards,

Yasmina

even 16bpc and max depth will get clipped to 12,10 bit with prores, but 8 bit and max depth unchecked, all prores will clip to 8bpc no matter what.
