hard drive vs. hard drive
on Mar 26, 2006 at 2:22:01 pm

I'm wondering about the benefits of the following setups below for my video drive. Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks!

1 500gb SATA video drive (spinning at 7200)

vs.

2 250gb SATA drives in a RAID0 (spinning at 7200)

vs.

2 300gb SCSI drives in a RAID0 (spinning at 10,000)

When hard drives were small, raid 0 was the answer to getting large amounts of storage.

Now that a single drive offers 500gb, why does anyone need to raid drives, especially when the config problems seem to be so perplexing?

yea, does anyone have an answer why not to simply go with a single 500 gig drive and be done with it?

Any 7200 rpm single drive can handle either DV or HDV video editing. If you're going to edit true HD video, then you need the higher bandwidth of a high-end RAID, one with its own cpu and RAM connected to a bank of SCSI or fiber channel drives.

However, you do need a hard drive separate from your boot drive.
