I like the idea of keeping full DV quality (12 - 13 gig/hr) for future re-edits.
The clients keep the original tapes & storing dozens of dv quality tapes on hard drives isn't feasable.
I'm looking into the possibility of using a digital-VHS deck like the JVC HMDH5U to record directly from mini-dv camcorders via firewire. The only info I can find is that the JVC HMDH5U has i-link (firewire) and records 3.5 hours HD & 35 hours analog. Don't know if or how long std dv would be.
Is anyone doing anything like this? It would save camcorders from a lot of work. Copy D-VHS program to HD, edit, make DVDs, erase HD for next project, & still have orig. dv copy.
