intro and advice

Hi,

Great website. Thanks for all the information on offer... my kinda guy is the video guy!

Well..I wanted to say hello first... and I am here because I am gonna gradualy build a new system on the most limited of finances. Basicly the cash from the beloved record collection I have decided to sell on ebay is being put into this new system!

So, my long-term plans are for a 64Bit Dual 3.2ghz system for 3ds max, after effects and avid pro editing... however, this is way out of my budget, so I have been researching for ages and I am going to have to start small and buy stuff which can eventualy be upgraded to the full potential.

Right now I have:

A PCH-DL mother board (new)
2 x 604 pin 533 p4 2ghz processors (2nd hand)
2x thermaltake xeon heatsinks/fans (new)

That's it..and trust me, that was a lot of record sales to even get this far.

So...I was starting to look for a case and psu and I've encountered my first problem. I want a server case, which I think will suit me better for easy access to upgrade etc plus lots of hard-drives but.. I have heard that now I need a special PSU, which is totaly new to me! I have been quoted £200. I was expecting to pay about £50 max. This is a real downer, I am running out of records fast.

So... Any general advice?

Also..the ram...do I have to have all four slots filled? Looking at your under $3000 page I get the impression it would be ok with just two. I will get 2x 1GB to start with and once I know all up and running I will expand with another 2x1gb.

A bit more about my background... I've been working in digital video realm for ages. 10+ years now. Wow..loads of projects, tv, film, indie etc etc. UK, USA mainly. I was originaly trained on Lightworks (4 years), then Avid Media Composer until I went it alone and got me a mega PII 233 with Pinnacle dv300 and Premiere 4 Smile Now I am running a really bruised and battered old P3 1.7ghz, media raid (200GB) 1gig ram, pinnacle dc2000 etc. etc... really on its last legs. I have also been using premier for years. Still on premier 6.0... I've worked with Boxx systems too. Obviously I am trying to build a bit of both machine... good for 3d/After EFfects but also a solid edit suite which can eventualy do HDV too.

So my stuff at present is old..but I have a lot of work ongoing. I used to work in TV but opted out and now just specialise in my own productions/music vids/documentaries etc etc. I like it this way.

Anyway, I'm totaly pleased to have found an active forum video geeks like me.. hello... nice to meet you all... looking forward to it.

Regards

Johnny Dangerous
