Asus P4T533-C/AGP 4x/Xpress DV: Best video card?
on Oct 30, 2005 at 4:16:16 pm

I'm running Xpress DV (not Pro) on a P4T533-C with 1 Gig of Rambus memory and a Matrox G550 32 Mb video card.
It seems to do fine, but I notice that the Avid specs now recommend Nvidia 128 Mb cards, the Quadro4 980 XGL and the Quadro FX 1100, that run on AGP 8x slots.
My motherboard only supports AGP 4x.

Would a better video card help me much? Normal playback and editing are fine, but I wouldn't mind faster effects rendering. Does the video card affect rendering, or is that only in the processor and memeory?

Would a 4x card like the Quadro4 900 XGL be almost as good?

Is there another 4x AGP card that would speed up my system?

Could I run the 980 XGL(8x AGP) on my 4x motherboard? Tom's Hardware seems to have used a P4T533-C board for their 980 XGL test two years ago:

I believe the issue here is higher voltage on the old 4x slots.

I'd like to limp this 3-year old system along for a while, maybe even upgrade to Xpress Pro.

Thanks!
