CCD's
on Jul 5, 2005 at 10:43:58 am

I'm looking for a new video camera and find I need to know more about what CCD means. Can someone point to an article explaining what CCD's are and what I should be looking for when it comes to CCD's in a video camera. THanks in advance for any help.

Ika

You can probably find a lot of in-depth info just by doing a Google search on "CCD" or "digital camcorders".

CCD stands for Charge Coupled Device. Less expensive cameras use a single sensor with a superimposed RGB matrix to yeild a combination of luminance and chroma information. The more expensive cameras use 3 CCD's. They all require a microchip to capture and process the information into a realtime video recording. The image sensor is only a small part of the process.

While it's nice to know what the technical terms mean, what's important is the end result. What package gives you the best overall video performance for the buck. Read camcorder reviews at http://www.cnet.com/ and http://www.videomaker.com/scripts/index.cfm to decide what you need and can afford.

Personally, I like Sony.
