I am a computer science student doing research in Tangible User Interfaces. My main project now is building a tangible interface for digital video editing, which is kind of like building an external controller except more complex. Our system will let the user sequence video clips, log and capture clips, add transitions, edit clips and more. I think the best way to implement this is by building a plug in for an existing piece of software.
So my question to you guys is, which NLE should I use for development?
The requirements are:
- the software should be very well coded with support for building plug ins.
- good tech support or other resources
- not overly complicated, our system will not support editing sound waves, or color correcting video. The functionality of iMovie would be around what we are shooting for.
Thanks in advance for any help/comments/suggestions

This is a little late but if you haven't found an answer yet, check out Jahshaka. It's an open source video editing solution. Since it is open source, you have access to the source code making a lot easier to write a plug in (I would think).
