Help choosing btwn 2 configs
on Apr 26, 2005 at 2:59:29 pm

Hey folks, could you give a hand here? Brain is turned to mush, need some objectivity.

This machine will be mostly a home system, but with the capability
to handle photo manipulation (Photoshop CS2) video import
(firewire), editing, rendering, encoding & burning to DVD. I'm
using Sony Vegas Studio, planning to upgrade to full Vegas
"eventually". I will also be doing some deep space imaging as well.

I will be using my current USB 2.0 floppy, DVD+-R/W, and 250gb
drives to supplement the system below. Both configs have FW a/b and
usb 2.0, decent sound onboard. One has WiFi b/g onboard as well.
Both include 17" analog LCD and 16x DVD-ROM as well as XP Pro. Will
be moving system & SW to a Raptor 10k 74GB drive as budget allows,
retaining the other drive(s) for processing/storage. Possibly
adding a sound card down the line as well.

(a) Asus NCCH-DL Mobo, Dual Xeon/3.0 800FSB, 1gb PC3200, WD SATA
80GB system drive, Radeon 9550SE 128mb AGP video, wireless b/g
adapter... $2,180 assembled/tested

(b) Asus P5AD2-E Premium mobo (wifi onboard), P4(775)#640 3.2
EM64T, 1GB PC2-5400 Perf. RAM, (2) 120GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
drives, GigaByte PCI-E 5750 128MB video... $2,163 assembled/tested

Now the NCCH-DL has no internal USB headers - so does that mean the
front USB ports won't operate unless I patch into the rear ports? Confused

Given a choice of these two, which would be best without being
overkill? It seems to me these are apples and oranges... a Xeon DP
with AGP video and 80GB versus P4#640 with PCI-E and 2x 120gb, but
if the Dual Xeon is that much better for my purposes, I'm willing to
sacrifice on the HD space to get into the system then add space as
needed.

I'd appreciate any input you might have. Hoping to order the system
by end of week.

Thanks much! Very Happy

Go with the Asus P5AD2-E Premium

It's a proven performer. We used it for our DIY2 article. Since then it's won almost every computer book & webistes award for best motherboard.

Gary, just so I understand, mobo aside, is a dual-xeon preferable to a p4(775)? or vice-versa? How does that work... are (2) 3.0 chips faster than a 3.2? Do two chips give THAT much advantage over a single cpu hyperthreading with dual channel RAM?

Thanks for pointing out the challenge, I'll go back and review it.

Definitely.
If you have more work then your 3.0Ghz chip can handle, then the second one will kick in help you get the job finished faster.
Hyperthreading is not even remotely the same is having two cpus.

If you have money and a lot of work to do, dual cpus are worth every penny.
Any videoguy will tell you we hate to wait. Wink
