Why do I need a Capture Card ?
on Apr 22, 2004 at 5:25:38 pm

With the advent of onboard firewire ports on most high end motherboards is there any reason to purchase a separate DV video capture card ?
Premiere Pro incorporates a capture utility that enables DV capture via the onboard firewire port.

Why do I need a separate capture card and what will it do for me that Premiere, along with its capture utility, won't already do ?

capture cards will give you analog in/out. most cards do some sort of realtime as well.

My Matrox RT.X100 gives me realtime video effects, analog video input, and analog video output. When I apply an effect, I can preview full screen on a television monitor, so I can see exactly what my customers will see. The hardware also gives me realtime transcoding for DVD. Rendering just takes too long to be practical for business purposes.
