Hard drive SATA / IDE???
on Apr 5, 2004 at 9:45:47 pm

Here is a question from a total newbie.....
I am trying to build a NLE system and so far been getting most my info from here...
I don't think I need to or want to set up a raid system at this stage...
Reading Jon's interview in the DIY sectiomn I have one question..
Can I set up my system the following way ..
Main system drive(O/S) on an IDE drive and the Video drive an SATA drive...
If so how/so..
Is it as simple as plug and play...
Thank you in advance
Tony

Dear Jon,

I just wanted to add myself to this thread that I am curious about the DIY machine and the reasoning behind not using any IDE drives.

Thanks!

Dave

that's the way to do it-I have found that when building a system, I have had no luck formatting drives on the sata channel-if you have a problem doing it, just slave the drive to the system drive(changing jumper settings of course) and formatting on the ide channel and then change jumpers back and attach to sata

I'm curious as well since I plan on doing basically the same thing. My concern is the connection. Can I hook up a SATA drive as a slave drive using my normal IDE cable?

No, SATA stands for Serial ATA. The data is transferred serially over fewer wires than your old ATA/IDE cable, which is a parallel interface. They are not compatible.
