USB Sucks for Video Capture?

I read somewhere that most USB devices are pretty bad for video capture -- for archiving VHS tape to DVD or for later editing. Is this true?

A USB capture card is just for someone who wants to archive footage and doesn't care about the quality.

It makes a difference whether the device was designed to work with USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 or not. There are some USB 2.0 hardware Mpeg encoders available that use the same chipsets TIVO II's and some set top DVD recorders use. IMOHP, they can create Mpeg 2 IBP that is comparable to that of Mpeg 2 IBP created from analog video that has been digitized as DV .avi and encoded with a software encoder at the same bit rate.

Of course, Mpeg 2 is not a good choice for more advanced editing.
