You can't take a video file, burn it on a DVD, and get it to play on a DVD player. You need a DVD authoring program to take your video and create a proper interleaved video DVD. No matter what video files you start with, they need to be encoded into MPEG2 IBP DVD-compliant format. Then the audio needs to be encoded into either PCM or Dolby Digital format. The video and audio are interleaved into VOB files with IFO (and BUP) files directing how to play the encoded video. Then the DVD burning software has to place the files in the correct positions on the DVD for the DVD player to recognize it.

There's lots of programs that will encode the audio/video, add the menuing structure for you, and burn the DVD, from MyDVD to Encore and ReelDVD.

Thanks for the guidance... obviously more reading needed!!!!

Can you recommend WHICH software I should begin with... I'll
research all three... but dones't anyone make a simple program
to take a video and creat a DVD without all the menus etc...
just simply put it on a disc so any DVD player can play it...like
a movie DVD????

I just don't see why this has to be so complicated... there are
millions of ordinary people that take video, and want to store to
a DVD for their friends and family... without having to deal with
professional type video production.

I tell you, as soon as someone makes something simple, they'll
be rich!!!!

Why can't we sail a boat on a highway? There are a number of entry-level programs that will let you convert your video to play in settop players. I know Ulead's DVD MovieFactory 3 will let you convert video to DVD files with no menu's. I think Pinnacle Studio 9, Sony Screenblast Movie Studio, Sonci MyDVD, and Ahead Nero (the DVD version) will do it.
