IDE configuration, hardware manuals conflict
on Jun 9, 2003 at 5:08:11 pm

Hi guys & girls, need expert advice.
I bought WD120G HD and aBuslink internalDVD+RW+R drive. Now from researching I was going to add the HD on the secondary IDE as masterfor video files.then I came upon this in the DVD burner manual.
"Detemin your existing IDE cofiguration It is recommended that you plug yourDVD drive and other non-hard drive device on separate cable from your ATA-66 and ATA-100 hard drive. ATA-66 and ATA-100 hard drives use aspecial IDE cable. Plugging in the CD-RW drive with those hard drives will drop the speed of the hard drive to ATA-33."
What should I do?

Upgrade to Windows XP and ignore this old advice. XP optimizes the performance of all your devices. On W2K, my Pioneer A03 would not work with DMA enabled and had to be configured to PIO. My A/V hard drive on the same cable worked fine.

On XP, my A03 will only work with DMA enabled, still with the A/V hard drive on the same cable.

Just be sure to buy an ATA-100 cable.
