Curious About the DV Deck Hype..
on May 12, 2003 at 3:42:14 am

I have a Canon GL-2 just got... have no clue how to really work it.. but basically I just hook it up to my firewire port.. my software mentions things about decks... what are decks... is there a purpose for them or would I just be wasting my money... and if they are of value any suggestions on where to get one and which one to get...

Thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

The "deck" reference is made because most professional NLE systems use a dedicated VCR or "deck" to capture from and record to tape. While you can spend anywhere from $800.00 to $2500.00 on a decent DV "spooling" deck, you're GL2 will do fine for now. However, using a deck will cut down on the use on your camera and make it more available as a camera instead of as a VCR which is what your essentially using it for when capturing and printing to tape.

Check out the "JVC SR-VS30U" and the JVC "BR-DV3000U". They're listed on the JVC website under Digital Broadcast & Professional Systems/Professional DV/ProDV VTRs

Good Luck!
