how to build video server for nle editing?
on Apr 8, 2003 at 8:16:48 pm

hi everyone,

at i've got two nle systems, one using a matrox rt.x100 and another using the matrox rt2500. they are using adobe premiere 6.5 and 6.1 respectively. Their OS are win xp pro and win 2000. They each has a 20gig OS drive and 2x80gig video drives (all ide).

here's what i'd like to do....

i want to build/buy a video server so that i can dump all my footage onto it and then be able to access any clip from either nle system and use it in the timeline. also in the near future i'm thinking of building another nle system so that it would also access the footage from the server.

currently the two nle systems are networked using 100baseT ethernet and an 8port switch

what would be a good solution to building a video server?
i'm thinking of using:
win xp pro
amd athlon xp 2000 (at least)
4x80gig ide drives in a raid config, but i'm not sure about what setup would give the fastest access to video data on a server...

my main questions are :
raid, what configuration?
what controller card ? brand/model? <------ my main question !!

OR can you recommend an existing video server (for a reasonable cost) that i can consider?

any advice?
