how to setup IDE controllers
on Mar 19, 2003 at 11:52:34 am

hey guys
i have 2 IDE controlers on my motherboard which gives me the use of 4 IDE devices (2 primary and 2 secondary)

i have 2 80 gig harddrives(WD800JB), a cd-rw, and a dvd player

how should i set them up
have one 80gig as primary and one as secondary off one controller
then have the cd-rw as primary then the dvd player as secondary?

what effect does being a secondard drive have? like do they still have same transfer rates etc?

thanks
mike

yeah, put the 2 hard drives together and the 2 cd/dvd drives together. the primary master should be your C drive and the slave should be the other drive. the cd/dvd drives dont really matter, but if you have a dvd burner, it should be the secondary master.

Each HD should be preferably on a separate IDE, as master.
Thus they can exchange data simultaneously
Then the other elements are slaves.
Of course the boot disk is on the primary IDE
DMA must be selected for the hard drives
