copying vhs tapes onto CD's through my computer

I just bought a cd burner and I want to record onto cd's my old vhs tapes. What do I need? Thank you for your help.

Sorry that I can't answer your question.

Now for the advice you didn't ask for:
I've heard that the quality is worse on a video CD than on VHS tape. If you don't need them now, you may want to wait until you can get them onto DVD somehow.

I'll second that motion that VCD is worse than VHS. VCD is formatted at the very low fixed bitrate of 1.1 Mb/sec video + 224 kb/sec audio. Any rapid motion results in very noticable compression artifacts. It's only as good as VHS, if nothing is moving.

SVCD is about double that at about 2.5 Mb/sec total, but will play on very few DVD players.

DVD allows up to 9.8 Mb/sec total with variable bitrate capability, i.e. more bits can be allocated when there's lots of motion, which requires more bits to represent without noticable compression artifacts.
