DVD Quality...Not So Good
on Aug 4, 2004 at 4:44:45 am

I captured about 25min of DV video (via firewire) using Ulead Video Studio 8 (DV Encoder Type 1). The quality of the original avi file looks/plays great on my computer screen and on the original DV tape.

Captured AVI File Properties: 720x480, file size 5.4 gb, frame rate 29.97, data rate 2871.35kbps, audio 32khz 12 bit stereo).

When I author/burn to DVD, the video quality of the DVD is dark and pixelated compared to the bright, crisp video image I see on the computer screen. I've also tried burning to DVD using Sonic DVDit and Roxio DVD Builder with the same disappointing results. Here are the output to DVD settings set in Ulead Studio 8:

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

AVI file capture rate looks incredibly low. When making a DVD you'll get better quality with a high datarate like 8000.
