1x, 2x, 4x, Speed Confusion

Hello,

I have the following question.
Blank DVD media cds have ceratin speeds such as 1x, 2x, 4x etc.

Are these speed only designed for recorders?

Does it affect normal home DVD players to play DVD's?

Thanx

Just as with CD-R's, the speed rating only applies to burner hardware. Although I think in the case of DVD's, the burner actually has a table of disk types in the firmware.

I'm curious if DVD's share the CD-R characteristic that best compatibilitiy is usually achieved using slower burn speeds and not the max rated speed of the media.

I have yet to detect any pattern that I can attribute to burning at 1x vs. 2x. As you pointed out regarding CD's that can be an issue. I haven't invested in a 4x DVD-R drive so I can only comment on 1x vs. 2x.
