Hello. This is my first post here, and I'm sorry if this has been asked before.
I'm going to make a stop motion film and then release it on dvd. The dv camcorder I want to get, though, only takes digital stills at 640x480 resolution. I may sell some things to get a much better camcorder, but I just want to know how much the quality would suffer with a 640x480 resolution stretched out to 720x480, and the put on dvd. Does it really only matter on the lines of resolution, or will the image size greatly affect the picture?
If you stretch the image to 720 it will be noticeable on the DVD as the aspect ratio will change. You will also lose some clarity as some pixels will be effectively doubled up.
Have you thought about just shooting in DV or even analog format and using a video editing application to remove the additional frames? You could do this by just recording in short bursts and then go in and just cut out the frames which are repetitive. What you are left with is the same effect as using stills but it is in the right aspect ratio for DVD.
