Software with Auto Resolution File Save
on Mar 24, 2005 at 4:44:38 pm

We are just starting out with video editing and have been informed by our glorious IS department that we have to have our .wmv output files stored where all people in the company can view. Something about auto resolution file type where if they have dial-up it will choose a lower resolution vs. high speed gets more automatically??? What editing software (low $ PLEASE) will allow this?

Windows Movie Maker will let you create separate files with data rates appropiate for the various internet connection speeds. I think most other video editing programs will do the same. I know Ulead's Video Studio 8 (soon to be 9) will do that.

The key will be designing an interface (a web page, for example) that will let the user select the appropiate file. There are lots and lots of web pages with this capability.

Tell your IS that they have some work to do to satisify their requirement.

IS refuses to have multiple files and claims there is a way to save ONE file that will play the video at the speed required by the user automatically. Is this true? If so - what is this feature & what software will allow it? Thanks!

Video editing software won't do that. Perhaps one of the streamcasting software programs will do it, but I don't know anything about streamcasting. Your IS should know or be able to find out about it for you.

There was an article at Microsoft.com concerning Windows Media Server and the automatic detection of connection speeds and users' software media players, but it didn't say anything about how the video would be created at the appropiate data rate.

This is a link to Microsoft.com and an explanation of "intelligent streaming" using Microsoft's Windows Media Services. This may be what your IS means.
